DOUBLE DATE is a growing, unpredictable estafette-style Gesamtkunstwerk, initiated by autonomous artists Max Onink & Elle van Baaren, located in our anti-squat studio space waiting for the inevitable demolishing of the building.
Every month, two artists join our exhibition space to add an object, gesture, sound, or challenge. Each contribution remains, building an environment that grows continuously. Some participants are invited in advance, others last minute. Some may never enter.
Alongside the two invited artists each month, +1 guests may appear: unexpected contributors such as critics, curators, or one-night performers, adding surprise and new perspectives.
The Double Date Trial
We are artists Max Onink and Elle van Baaren. From our autonomous studios we have opened an exhibition space, not only as a celebration of this large, generous place, but as a site already burdened with its own death sentence: the building is marked for demolition. That awareness of a predetermined end is difficult to digest, we are wired to avoid the thought of our own mortality, yet it shapes everything.
Just like in life, the exhibition space keeps accumulating. Each month artists add their work, their baggage, their presence. The longer the place resists, the denser it becomes, a body growing older, heavier with memory, until the moment of execution. Its destruction is inevitable, swallowed by housing crises, nitrogen policies, bureaucratic procedures. This fragility forces us to act: to make use of the temporary, to build intensity in the brief openings that are already slipping away across Amsterdam.
The Double Date Trial is a research into the space itself: what has been here, what will come, how demolition creeps closer and who dictates the tempo. By tracing the urban plans, we weave them into the exhibition. Every postponement is celebrated as stolen time, every acceleration mourned as premature death. We don’t resist the process, but stage it, making visible an exhibition that is both alive and condemned. A work that ends, but maybe eventually reincarnates elsewhere...
