Elle van Baaren (b. 2000, Netherlands)
I work in the area where perception shifts and meaning starts to come apart. My past research into seeing and being seen resulted in a panoptic peepshow installation
The Panopticum Show (2023), in which the viewer waits for a performance that never begins.

At the moment, I am investigating how to move from being an featured extra to taking on a leading role, or even becoming the director.

I build installations that I refer to as “sets,” where the boundary between prop and sculpture dissolves. I create environments in which the viewer becomes an active participant and is fully immersed.

In presentation, it is important to me that the work remains alive and does not end up in a graveyard. My question is: how do you prevent the viewer from becoming a coroner?

Alongside my individual practice, I am co-founder of STUDIO MAX & ELLE, an artist-run space I initiate together with artist Max Onink. The space functions as a self-organized, non-profit platform for artistic production, presentation, and exchange, based on horizontal collaboration and a shared sense of urgency among artists.

Within institutional systems, works are often stabilized and neutralized so that the viewer can remain safe. I investigate how to shift that position; not by waiting for permission, but by actively producing the conditions for existence.
